Pomembnost in širina raziskav na tem področju sta podkreplje- ni še s člankoma v revijah JACS in Chemistry of Materials.
Poleg tega smo znanstveno odličnost potrdili tudi s številnimi objavami v drugih uglednih mednarod-
Our research is aimed at the education and pro- fessional development of young intellectuals. We are particularly proud of our education activity, which is notable for the high number of young PhD students who are generating new knowledge in our laboratories. There were as many as 71 such students in 2015, or more then one ifth of our employees. This is an important demonstration of the Institute’s mission – to transfer knowledge to younger generations. It also proves that we are a major Slovenian academic institution for doctoral education and training.
The Institute’s main mission is to acquire new knowledge in chemistry and related sciences. We have proven our scientiic excellence with numer- ous articles published in prestigious magazines, most notably the article written in collaboration with College de France on research into new materials for modern battery systems published in Science magazine. The article entitled “Visual- ization of O-O peroxo-like dimers in high-capac- ity layered oxides for Li-ion batteries” is the irst publication of the National Institute of Chemistry in this prestigious magazine, which is one of the top two scientiic magazines in the world and as such conirms the leading role of the Department for Materials Chemistry in this ield. Using various methods, we have proven that in speciic cases the oxygen sublattice in a crystal structure can revers- ibly enter the electrochemical reaction. This con- siderably increases the overall speciic capacity or the reversibly stored energy. These results are an important step towards the transition to a society that is independent of fossil fuels and are compli- ant with guidelines on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The importance and the breadth of research in this ield are further supported with the articles published in JACS and Chemistry of Materials.
The National Institute of Chemistry is one of the most important Slovenian academic institutions. Its employees have been discovering the unknown in chemistry and related sciences for many years.

nih publikacijah.
Naše ekspertize vkl- jučujejo v svoje raziskave slovenska in tuja podjet- ja.
We also demonstrated our scientiic excellence with numerous contributions published in other repu- table international journals. An employee of the Department for Synthetic Biology and Immunolo- gy participated in research that was published in Cell Metabolism. In addition, Angewandte Chemie published three articles that cover other ields in which the Institute’s research departments are ac- tive. The Department for Analytical Chemistry col- laborated on the development of a new antibiotic for the most resistant pathogenic strains, while the Department for Inorganic Chemistry and Technol- ogy developed a new method for determining the spatial distribution of various organic molecules that form frameworks in metal-organic materi- als. Through NMR experiments, the NMR Centre showed that a sequence of a guanine-rich DNA segment can have a major impact on the polymor- phic nature of the G-quadruplexes formed and thus their potential physiological roles. Several review articles were published, among them the Depart- ment for Analytical Chemistry’s article in Chemical Reviews on identiication of organic compounds in the atmosphere and the Department for Molecular Biology and Nanobiotechnology’s article in Ac- counts of Chemical Research on the impact of lipid membranes on the functioning of proteins. These journals are among the top most reputable scien- tiic journals in the ield of chemistry and related sciences.
The third important mission of the Institute is the transfer of knowledge into an industrial environ- ment. Slovenian and foreign companies rely on our scientiic reports for their own research. We are particularly pleased by the increase in the extent of cooperation with domestic and especially foreign industry in 2015. We work with some of the most important foreign companies in the automotive and nanobiotechnological industries, among oth- ers. The successfully completed research projects and the satisfaction of our business partners are important indicators that we are on the right track. We are planning to further strengthen this kind of collaboration in the future through discus- sions with industrial partners.
In terms of Slovenian society’s output, we believe science is what will make our country globally

€, kar v primerjavi z letom 2014 predstavlja 0,6-odstotno zmanjšanje. Gibanje stroškov sledi realiziranim prihodkom.

Overview of Institute Operations
In 2015, the reduction of the public funds intended for research activities continued, which further characterized the operations of the National Institute of Chemistry. However, in 2015, the National Institute of Chemistry strengthened its cooperation with the industry and its eforts to obtain EU projects, which increased the scope of funds obtained on the market. The institute is constantly adapting to the trend of the reduction of public funds and the slow growth in research services performed for Slovenian clients by limiting cost growth and planning the reduction of costs for the following year. Due to the above, in 2015 we continued successfully obtaining projects inanced by the European Union and cooperating with Slovenian and foreign industrial partners.
The institute concluded 2015 with an excess of revenues over expenses after tax in the amount of €3,088, taking into account the revenue surplus from previous years intended to cover
expenses for this accounting period amounting to €140,691. The operating result achieved is primarily due to the excess of revenues over expenses in the sale of goods and services on the market amounting to €2,476, taking into account corporate income tax. The
institute’s total revenues for 2015 amounted to
€14,505,249, excluding the excess of revenues from previous years intended for covering the expenses from this accounting period, which represents a nominal 1.6% decline compared to 2014 mainly due to the fact that programs and projects ended at the end of 2014. In 2015, the institute realised expenses in the total amount of €14,633,474, representing a 0.6% decrease compared to 2014. The trend of costs was in accordance with the realized revenues.

Commission for Innovation
innovations are of paramount importance to the national institute of Chemistry both in terms of science as such and in terms of working together with the industry and pursuing the institute’s mission.
The national institute of Chemistry’s policy on innovations and the transfer of knowledge and technologies into the economy has been co-shaped by the four-member Commission for innovation (Ci) for a number of years. its key tasks include managing procedures on acceptance of job-related inventions, providing opinions in procedures before national and foreign patent oices and participation in commercialisation. The transfer of technologies is carried out interactively, by establishing business networks, organising professional meetings, and so on.
Knowledge Transfer into the Economy
prikazovanje nihanja temperature artiklov nad predpisano mejo v hladni verigi
izum obravnava zaznavanje nihanja
temperature preko zgornje oziroma predpisane temperature vzdrževanja artiklov v hladni verigi.
Patents
In 2015, the National Institute of Chemistry recorded ive new patent applications (three Slovenian and two European) and granted twelve patents (six Slovenian, one European, one american and four austrian).
In 2015, the Institute was also successful in the transfer of knowledge to the economy.
in addition to selling its share in one of the inventions, the Institute also concluded a license agreement with Kolpa d.d. for the
“Modiied bitumen and its use for preparing asphalt mixtures and bituminous products”
patent. The invention is especially interesting to asphalt manufacturers and the construction industry, as PMMA/ATH modiied bitumen has a higher resistance to the main pavement failure mechanisms such as rutting, stripping, cold cracking and fatigue cracking while it also utilizes PMMA/ATH dust, which is basically waste material.
Biggest achievements in 2015:
Temperature indicator for displaying product temperature luctuations above the prescribed limit in the cold chain
This invention deals with the detection of temperature luctuations above the top or prescribed temperature for product preservation in the cold chain.
The temperature indicator works by means of chemical and physical changes of the indicator material and therefore does not need a power supply. The recorded information is readable under all circumstances that enable visual perception or video detection.
In addition, the indicator irreversibly records the time of exceeding the pre-set temperature, which is lower than room temperature. When used on products in the cold chain, it also provides information on their safety and quality
