UVODNA BESEDA DIREKTORjA / THE

DIRECTOR’S FOREwORD

The introductory speech for the Report on the Activities of the National Institute of Chemistry in 2014 should have been written by our dear colleague prof. dr. janko jamnik but he is unfortunately no longer among us. Thus, the first words of this introduction are intended for him. I respected dr. janko jamnik highly. He was in charge of the National Institute of Chemistry since 2008 and his main goal was to strengthen the position of the Institute in the global scientific field, which he largely succeeded in achieving. He drew excellent researchers to the National Institute of Chemistry and created a true research and innovation environment, including an ambitious network of researchers and their teams, institutes, centres, companies etc.

He was very innovative and had an exceptional capability for connecting the world of science with industry. He believed in a better society where knowledge, achievements and innovation play an important role. He also believed in young people, knew how to encourage them and also enable the best of them to perform research at the laboratories of the Institute.

Tragic fate stopped him in the middle of his path. we shall miss his cheerful, optimistic view of the future, his commitment to managing the Institute and his efforts to place the Institute among the best.

The achievements of the National Institute of Chemistry under the management of prof. jamnik had a resounding success on the Slovenian and global levels, even in 2014.

we have demonstrated our scientific excellence with publications in the renowned Nature Family group of journals. Colleagues from the Laboratory of Biotechnology, the EN-FIST Centre of Excellence and the Faculty of Computer and Information Science of the University of Ljubljana have, using proteins, structured logical circuits in human cells so that they process input signals based on a similar logic to electronic computers. Besides this, they succeeded in preparing genetic switches that could function simultaneously in cells, meaning that the cells could save more information and their operation could be directed in an easier manner. These discoveries promise a more accurate control of the operation and response of cells to various signals, which could primarily be useful for medical and diagnostic purposes. The new discoveries were published in Nature Chemical Biology and Nature Communications. The latter also published a presentation of a new four-stranded structure with a guanine-rich DNA sequence that surprisingly does not form a G-quadruplex. It was discovered by the colleagues of the National Institute of Chemistry’s NMR centre, the EN-FIST Centre of Excellence and the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the University of Ljubljana. The new guanine-rich structure expands the current repertoire of known DNA structures and provides a fundamental insight into forces that drive the folding of the oligonucleotide DNA chain.

Uvodne besede k Poročilu o delu Kemijskega inštituta v letu 2014 bi moral napisati cenjeni kolega prof. dr. janko jamnik, a ga žal ni več med nami. Zato so prve besede v tem uvodu namenjene prav njemu. Dr. janka jamnika sem zelo cenil.

Kemijski inštitut je vodil od leta 2008, njegov glavni cilj je bil utrditev položaja Kemijskega inštituta v svetovni znanstveni sferi, in to mu je v veliki meri uspelo. Na Kemijski inštitut je pritegnil odlične raziskovalce in ustvaril pravi raziskovalno- inovativen ekosistem, ki vključuje ambiciozno mrežo raziskovalcev in njihovih timov, inštitutov, centrov, podjetij … Bil je zelo prodoren in je imel izjemno sposobnost

povezovanja sveta znanosti in industrije. Verjel je v boljšo družbo, kjer imajo pomembno vlogo znanje, dosežki in inovacije. Zelo je zaupal v mlade ljudi, znal jih je spodbuditi in najboljšim je tudi omogočil, da so raziskovali v laboratorijih inštituta.

Tragična usoda ga je ustavila sredi njegove poti. Pogrešali bomo njegov vedri, optimistični pogled v prihodnost in njegovo zavzetost pri vodenju inštituta ter umeščanju inštituta med najodličnejše.

Dosežki Kemijskega inštituta pod vodstvom prof. jamnika so tudi v l. 2014 odmevali v slovenskem in svetovnem prostoru.

Našo znanstveno odličnost smo izkazali z objavami v prestižni skupini revij Nature Family. Sodelavci Laboratorija za biotehnologijo, Centra odličnosti EN-FIST in Fakultete za računalništvo in informatiko Univerze v Ljubljani so z uporabo proteinov skonstruirali logična vezja v človeških celicah, tako da obdelujejo vhodne signale na podlagi podobne logike kot elektronski računalniki. Poleg tega jim je uspelo pripraviti genska stikala, ki bi lahko vzporedno delovala v celicah, kar pomeni, da bi lahko v celice shranili več informacij in bi lažje usmerjali njihovo delovanje. Obetajo si, da bodo te iznajdbe omogočile bolj natančno kontrolo delovanja in odziva celic na različne signale, kar bi bilo lahko uporabno predvsem za medicinske in diagnostične namene. we have also demonstrated our scientific excellence with numerous publications in other renowned international publications. For example, colleagues from the NMR Centre discovered a new way of forming DNA G-quadruplexes and published it in the Angewandte Chemie journal. This allowed for a structural, thermodynamic and kinetic evaluation of the intermediate states, which represents an important step in the efforts to explain the general principles according to which the G-quadruplexes take on their native fold. They also participated in the discovery of a new method for the direct detection of sulfate transport in lipid bilayers, which was published in Chemical Science. Colleagues from the Laboratory of Biotechnology, the Laboratory for Biocomputing and Bioinformatics and colleagues from the University of Tubingen discovered the molecular mechanism of the development of lymphoma and published it in the Blood journal. New findings from the studies of molecular interactions of proteins that participate in the biosynthesis of proteins and the cytoskeleton, with the participation of colleagues from the Laboratory for Molecular Biology and Nanobiotechnology, were published in the journals Nucleic Acid Research and EMBO reports. A comprehensive overview of their achievements in the field of damage to cell lipid membranes with protein pores, which are important in the field of bacterial pathogenesis and the immune system of vertebrates, was published in Trends in Biochemical Sciences. Nucleic Acid Research also presented the web server ProBiS-ligands, which was developed by colleagues from the Laboratory for Molecular Modelling. Their greatest achievements are also included in a comprehensive overview of the field of bioinformatics forecasting of protein binding sites presented in Current Opinion in Structural Biology.

Colleagues from the Laboratory for Materials Chemistry used an in operando analytical method developed in their group and in an article published in ChemSusChem explained the differences in the mechanism of the operation of the Li-S battery in the presence of two different electrolytes.

Scientific excellence is also confirmed by our researchers, who received a series of recognitions and awards in Slovenia and abroad (described on pages 22-26). I would like to point out Prof. Dr. Roman jerala, who received a decoration from the Republic of Slovenia - a medal for accomplishments in the promotion of Slovenian science and higher education in the international arena.

In 2014, we continued our investments in improving the quality of the work environment at the Institute and started renovating the extension and the old building of the National Institute of Chemistry, for which we acquired three million two hundred thousand Euros from the European Regional Development Fund. with the above investment, the National Institute of Chemistry will renovate some laboratories encompassing more than 1,500 m2 and will purchase new research equipment. The goal of the investment is to ensure quality and modern infrastructure.

I wish the colleagues from the Institute a successful continuation of their path, which was planned by Prof.

jamnik, in order for them to use their top science to contribute to the progress of society, development and prosperity.

Acad. Prof. Dr. janez Levec Acting Director odkritji sta objavljeni v Nature Chemical Biology in Nature

Communications. V slednji reviji je predstavljena tudi nova štirivijačna prostorska struktura z gvanini bogatega DNK- zaporedja, ki presenetljivo ne tvori G-kvadrupleksa. Odkrili so jo sodelavci NMR centra, Centra odličnosti EN-FIST in Fakultete za kemijo in kemijsko tehnologijo Univerze v Ljubljani. Nova z gvanini bogata struktura razširja trenuten repertoar znanih struktur DNK in omogoča bistven razmislek, katere sile vodijo zvijanje oligonukleotidne DNK-verige.

Poleg tega smo znanstveno odličnost potrdili tudi s številnimi objavami v drugih uglednih mednarodnih publikacijah.

Npr. sodelavci NMR centra so odkrili nov način tvorbe DNK G-kvadrupleksov in ga objavili v reviji Angewandte Chemie.

Pri tem so lahko strukturno, termodinamsko in kinetično ovrednotili intermediatna stanja, kar predstavlja pomemben korak v prizadevanjih, da bi pojasnili splošna načela, po katerih G-kvadrupleksi prevzamejo nativno zvitje. Sodelovali so tudi pri odkritju nove metode za direktno detektiranje prenosa sulfata v lipidnih dvoslojih, objavljene v reviji Chemical Science. Sodelavci Laboratorija za biotehnologijo, Laboratorija za računalniške bioznanosti in bioinformatiko ter sodelavci Univerze v Tuebingenu so odkrili molekulski mehanizem razvoja limfoma in ga objavili v reviji Blood. Novi izsledki raziskav molekulskih interakcij proteinov, ki sodelujejo pri biosintezi proteinov in celičnem skeletu, pri katerih so sodelovali sodelavci Laboratorija za molekularno biologijo in nanobiotehnologijo, so objavljeni v revijah Nucleic Acid Research in EMBO reports. Celovit pregled svojih dosežkov na področju poškodb celičnih lipidnih membran s proteinskimi porami, ki so pomembni za področja bakterijske patogeneze in imunskega sistema vretenčarjev, pa so objavili v reviji Trends in Biochemical Sciences. V Nucleic Acid Research je predstavljen tudi spletni strežnik ProBiS-ligands, ki so ga razvili sodelavci Laboratorija za molekularno modeliranje.

Njihovi najpomembnejši dosežki so vključeni tudi v celovit pregled področja bioinformatičnega napovedovanja proteinskih vezavnih mest, ki so ga podali v reviji Current Opinion in Structural Biology. Sodelavci Laboratorija za kemijo materialov so uporabili doma razvito analitsko metodo in operando in v prispevku, objavljenem v reviji ChemSusChem, razložili razlike v mehanizmu delovanja Li-S- akumulatorja v prisotnosti dveh različnih elektrolitov.

Znanstveno odličnost potrjujejo tudi naši raziskovalci, ki so prejeli vrsto priznanj in nagrad doma in v tujini (opisano na straneh 22–26). Izpostavil bi prof. dr. Romana jeralo, ki je prejel državno odlikovanje Republike Slovenije, medaljo za zasluge pri uveljavljanju slovenske znanosti in visokega šolstva v mednarodnem prostoru.

V letu 2014 smo še naprej investirali v izboljšanje kakovosti delovnega okolja na inštitutu in začeli obnavljati prizidek in staro stavbo Kemijskega inštituta, za kar smo pridobili tri milijone dvesto tisoč sredstev Evropskega sklada za regionalni razvoj. Z omenjeno naložbo bo Kemijski inštitut prenovil nekaj laboratorijev, ki obsegajo preko 1.500 m2 tlorisnih površin, in nakupil novo raziskovalno opremo. Cilj investicije je zagotoviti kakovostno in sodobno infrastrukturo.

Ob koncu sodelavcem inštituta želim uspešno nadaljevanje poti, v smeri, ki jo je začrtal prof. jamnik, da z vrhunsko znanostjo prispevajo k družbenemu napredku, razvoju in blaginji.

PREGLED POSLOVANjA INŠTITUTA

V letu 2014 se je nadaljevalo zmanjševanje obsega javnih sredstev, namenjenih za raziskovalno dejavnost, kar je močno zaznamovalo poslovanje Kemijskega inštituta (KI). Prav tako je še vedno opazna previdnost industrijskih partnerjev pri namenjanju sredstev za raziskave in razvoj. Delno povečanje prihodkov je posledica zaključevanja nekaterih programov in projektov konec leta 2014, vendar pa smo se na inštitutu prilagodili pričakovanemu krčenju sredstev za izvajanje javne službe ter počasi rastočemu obsegu opravljenih raziskovalnih storitev za domače naročnike z omejevanjem rasti stroškov ter planiranemu zniževanju stroškov v prihodnjem letu. Tudi v letu 2014 se je nadaljevalo uspešno pridobivanje projektov, financiranih s strani Evropske unije in v sodelovanju s tujimi

industrijskimi partnerji.

Inštitut je leto 2014 zaključil s presežkom prihodkov nad odhodki po davkih v višini 75.493 EUR, upoštevajoč presežek prihodkov iz prejšnjih let, namenjenih pokritju odhodkov obračunskega obdobja, ki so znašali 87.302 EUR. Dosežen poslovni rezultat inštituta je predvsem

posledica presežka prihodkov nad odhodki iz naslova prodaje blaga in storitev na trgu, ki je znašal 60.111 EUR z upoštevanjem davka od dohodkov pravnih oseb.

Inštitut je v letu 2014 realiziral celotne prihodke v višini 14.733.782 EUR; to predstavlja nominalno 7-odstotno povečanje glede na leto 2013, predvsem na račun zaključevanja programov in projektov konec leta 2014.

Inštitut je v letu 2014 realiziral celotne odhodke v višini 14.728.606 EUR, kar v primerjavi z letom 2013 predstavlja 6,9-odstotno povečanje. Gibanje stroškov sledi

realiziranim prihodkom.

OVERVIEw OF INSTITUTE OPERATIONS

The reduced volume of public funds invested in research activities continued in 2014, leaving a strong mark on the operations of the National Institute of Chemistry. It is also evident that industry partners are still being careful when allocating funding for research and development. The partial increase in revenue is the result of the programmes and projects that were brought to completion at the end of 2014.

The Institute adapted to the expected reduction in funding for providing public services and the languid growth in the number of research services performed for domestic clients by limiting the increase of costs while simultaneously planning cost reductions for the upcoming year. In 2014, we successfully obtained additional projects financed by the European Union and in collaboration with foreign industry partners.

The Institute concluded 2014 with an excess of revenues over expenses after tax in the amount of €75,493, taking into account the revenue surplus from previous years intended to cover expenses for the accounting period amounting to €87,302. The achieved operating result is primarily due to the excess of revenues over

expenses in the sale of goods and services on the market amounting to €60,111, taking into account corporate income tax. The total revenues for 2014 amounted to €14,733,782, representing a nominal 7%

increase compared to 2014, primarily on account of the completion of programmes and projects at the end of 2014. In 2014, the Institute realised expenses in the total amount of €14,728,606, representing a 6.9% increase compared to 2013. The changes in costs follow the realised revenue.

V letu 2014 je inštitut investiral v osnovna sredstva 1.489.855 EUR. Investicije je omogočilo tudi uspešno pridobivanje zunanjih virov financiranja. V tem letu sta se začela projekta obnove prizidka in stare stavbe Kemijskega inštituta, ki bosta realizirana v letu 2015. Ocenjena vrednost obnove prizidka Kemijskega inštituta je 2.237.029 EUR, vrednost obnove stare stavbe Kemijskega inštituta pa je 1.714.520 EUR. Obe obnovi bo sofinanciralo resorno ministrstvo – sredstva Evropskega sklada za regionalni razvoj v višini 85 % in Republike Slovenije v višini 15 % pridobljenih sredstev.

V letu 2014 je inštitut investiral v opremo 1.244.704 EUR, v nepremičnine 178.288 EUR in imel za 66.863 EUR ostalih investicij.

Med novimi pridobitvami raziskovalne opreme večje vrednosti so predvsem:

• masni spektrometer z ionizacijo Agilent

• laser Ablation Analyte G2 EXCIMER

• aparatura za merjenje molekularnih interakcij

• tekočinski kromatograf (HPLC) Agilent 1260 Infinity

• Potenciostat MPG2

Pridobljeni in zaključeni raziskovalni projekti

V letu 2014 je inštitut začel izvajati oziroma sodelovati pri izvajanju 20 projektov javne agencije za raziskovalno dejavnost Republike Slovenije (ARRS):

• štirje aplikativni projekti (eden kot nosilec) z ocenjenimi prihodki na letni ravni v višini 126.720,62 EUR;

• 14 temeljnih projektov (šest kot nosilec) z

ocenjenimi prihodki na letni ravni v višini 585.317,72 EUR;

• dva nova podoktorska projekta s prihodki na letni ravni v višini 106.522 EUR.

V letu 2014 je KI zaključil temeljne, aplikativne in podoktorske projekte s prihodki leta 2014 v višini 436.249,31 EUR (872.498,62 EUR prihodkov letno).

Dejavnosti inštituta v letu 2014:

• Kot koordinator je vodil evropski strateški projekt DeFishGear v skupni vrednosti 5,3 mio EUR (vrednost projekta za KI je 675.112 EUR, od tega je 641.357 EUR sofinanciranih). Prihodki v letu 2014 so znašali 132.140,59 EUR.

• Sodeloval je pri šestih projektih 7. okvirnega programa EU. Prihodki v letu 2014 so znašali 445.516,18 EUR.

• Koordiniral je izvajanje projekta EUROLIS 7.

okvirnega programa Evropske skupnosti v skupni vrednosti 3,9 mio EUR (vrednost projekta za KI je 782.630 EUR, od tega je sofinanciranih 633.830 EUR). Prihodki v letu 2014 so znašali 175.075,29 EUR.

• Zaključil je tri projekte 7. okvirnega programa sofinancirane v vrednosti 788.888,38 EUR.

Research projects acquired and completed

In 2014, the Institute launched or participated in 20 projects of the Slovenian Research Agency:

• four applied projects (one as the developer) with estimated annual revenues in the amount of

€126,720.62;

• 14 basic projects (six as the developer) with estimated annual revenues in the amount of

€585,317.72;

• two new postdoctoral projects with annual revenues in the amount of €106,522.

• In 2014, the Institute completed basic, applied and postdoctoral projects, generating revenues for the year equalling €436,249.31 (€872,498.62 annual revenues).

• Pridobil je projekt ERA-NET ERASynBio in ga začel izvajati. Projekt se je začel izvajati 15. 9. 2014 in traja tri leta. Vrednost projekta je 450.000 EUR, od tega 400.000 EUR za KI. Prihodki v letu 2014 so znašali 20.445,91 EUR

• Zaključil je projekt ERA NET Storeheat. Prihodki v letu 2014 so znašali 9.232,33 EUR.

• Zaključil je projekt PLASTICE programa Central Europe. Prihodki v letu 2014 so znašali 91.721,47 EUR.

• Zaključil je projekt Trans2Care. Prihodki v letu 2014 so znašali 19.114,27 EUR.

• Izvajal je projekt Life project Prosil v vrednosti 104.298 EUR. Prihodki v letu 2014 so znašali 18.989,91 EUR.

• Zaključil je projekt Nova generacija raziskovalcev ved o življenju (vrednost celotnega projekta je 700.000 EUR, vrednost projekta za KI je 366.383 EUR).

Prihodki v letu 2014 so znašali 146.429,11 EUR.

• Začel je izvajati prvi projekt iz programa Horizon2020 MefCO2. Projekt se je začel izvajati decembra 2014, traja štiri leta, njegova pogodbena (in sofinancirana) vrednost za KI pa je 1.195.300 EUR.

• Začel je izvajati projekt iz sheme NEwFELPRO.

Projekt se dve leti izvaja na KI. Vrednost projekta za KI je 96.400 EUR.

• 11 podoktorskih raziskovalcev na začetku kariere je v letu 2014 izvajalo projekte, pridobljene leta 2013 na razpisu za spodbujanje raziskovalcev na začetku kariere. Projekte financira Ministrstvo za izobraževanje, znanost in šport (MIZŠ) posredno iz sredstev Evropske skupnosti. V letu 2014 so prihodki znašali 536.448 EUR.

Revenues in 2014 equalled €536,448.

Investments

In 2014, the Institute invested €1,489,855 in fixed assets. The successful acquisition of external financial resources contributed to making these investments possible. In this year, we launched two reconstruction projects: for the extension and for the old building of the Institute. They are scheduled for completion in 2015. The estimated values of reconstructing the extension and the old building of the Institute are

€2,237,029 and €1,714,520, respectively. Both reconstruction projects will be co-financed by the relevant ministry – 85% of the funds raised will be provided by the European Regional Development Fund and 15% by the Republic of Slovenia.

In 2014, the Institute invested €1,244,704 in equipment, €178,288 in real estate and made €66,863 worth of other investments.

ZAPOSLENI IN IZOBRAŽEVANjE

Število zaposlenih na Kemijskem inštitutu se je v letu 2014 z 285 povečalo na 287 zaradi nadomeščanja porodniških dopustov v splošnem sektorju. Glede na leto 2013 je skupno število raziskovalcev, mladih raziskovalcev in strokovnega osebja (torej zaposlenih v znanstvenem sektorju) ostalo nespremenjeno, število administrativnega osebja (zaposlenih v sektorju skupnih služb) pa se je povečalo za sedem odstotkov.

Leta 2014 je na Kemijskem inštitutu začelo delati 11 novih mladih raziskovalcev, usposabljanje pa je končalo 13 mladih raziskovalcev.

Konec leta 2014 je bilo na Kemijskem inštitutu 287 zaposlenih, od tega 131 doktorjev znanosti, štirje magistri, 120 visoko izobraženih, osem višje izobraženih in 24 srednje ali nižje izobraženih.

V tujih raziskovalnih organizacijah se je dlje od enega meseca usposabljalo 23 zaposlenih na inštitutu.

Z inštitutom je v letu 2014 sodelovalo 52 tujih

raziskovalcev, štirje tuji raziskovalci pa so se v letu 2014 na inštitutu zaposlili.

EMPLOYEES AND EDUCATION

The number of employees at the National Institute of Chemistry increased from 285 to 287 in 2014 due to substitutes for maternity leave in the general sector.

Compared to 2013, the total number of researchers, early-stage researchers and professional staff (i.e.

employees in the science sector) remained unchanged, while the number of administrative staff (employees in the sector of common services) increased by 7%.

11 new early-stage researchers started working and 13 early-stage researchers completed their training at the National Institute of Chemistry in 2014.

At the end of 2014, the National Institute of Chemistry employed 287 people, of which 131 with a PhD, four with an MSc, 120 with higher education, eight with higher vocational education and 24 with secondary education or lower.

23 Institute employees underwent training at foreign research organisations lasting for more than one month.

52 foreign researchers collaborated with the Institute and four foreign researchers obtained employment at the Institute in 2014.

Družbena odgovornost

Kemijski inštitut tudi to leto, kot že nekaj let, zavezo družbeni odgovornosti potrjuje kot pridruženi član v pobudi Združenih narodov Global Compact.

S pridruženim članstvom smo se prostovoljno obvezali, da bomo spoštovali in promovirali temeljna načela družbene odgovornosti.

Objave in citiranost v letu 2014

V letu 2014 je Kemijski inštitut beležil 285 objav, ki zajemajo članke, knjige, poglavja in patente. Povprečni faktor vpliva revij, v katerih so v letu 2014 objavljali raziskovalci Kemijskega inštituta, je znašal 3,748, kar predstavlja znatno izboljšanje glede na preteklo leto. Povprečno mesto v letu 2014, ki ga zaseda revija na določenem področju, je bilo 26, kar ravno tako izkazuje izboljšanje glede na preteklo leto. Citiranost znanstvenih del naših raziskovalcev, ki je pomemben kazalnik uspešnosti, je v letu 2014 znašala 6139 čistih citatov. Vse to omogoča tako večjo konkurenčnost pri prijavi mednarodnih in domačih raziskovalnih projektov kot tudi večjo prepoznavnost v raziskovalnih krogih na posameznih področjih raziskovanja.

Posebej velja izpostaviti dosežke skupine slovenskih znanstvenikov iz Laboratorija za biotehnologijo (L12), ki so rezultate svojega dela objavili v prestižnih revijah Nature Chemical Biology (s faktorjem vpliva 13,2) in Nature Communications (faktor vpliva 10,7), ter znanstvenike Nacionalnega centra za NMR- spektroskopijo visoke ločljivosti (L-15), ki sta jim uspeli objavi v reviji Angewandte Chemie, kjer je faktor vpliva znašal 11,3, ter v reviji Nature Communications

Publications and citations in 2014

In 2014, the National Institute of Chemistry had 285 publications, which includes articles, books, chapters and patents. The average impact factor of the journals in which researchers of the National Institute of Chemistry published in 2014 was 3.748, which is a significant improvement over the year before. In 2014, the average ranking of a journal in a given field was 26, which is also an improvement compared to the previous year.

The number of citations of our researchers’ works, an important indicator of success, equalled 6139 citations (excluding self-citations) in 2014. All of this allows greater competitiveness in the application of international and domestic research projects, as well as greater visibility in research circles in specific research areas.

Especially notable achievements were made by the group of Slovenian scientists from the Laboratory of Biotechnology (L12) who published the results of their work in the prestigious journals Nature Chemical Biology (impact factor 13.2) and Nature Communications (impact factor 10.7), as well as by scientists from the Slovenian NMR Centre (L15) who were published in Angewandte Chemie, with an impact factor of 11.3, and 35 diplom / Undergraduate Theses

Državno odlikovanje Republike Slovenije

Prof. dr. Roman Jerala, vodja Laboratorija za

biotehnologijo, je prejel državno odlikovanje Republike Slovenije, medaljo za zasluge pri uveljavljanju slovenske znanosti in visokega šolstva v mednarodnem prostoru.

Prof. Dr. Roman Jerala, Head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology, received a decoration of the Republic of Slovenia – a medal for accomplishments in the promotion of Slovenian science and higher education in the international arena.

Zoisova nagrada in Puhovo priznanje

Zoisovo nagrado za življenjsko delo je prejel akademik prof. dr. Janez Levec, vodja Laboratorija za katalizo in kemijsko reakcijsko inženirstvo.

V slovenskem prostoru je eden izmed začetnikov raziskovanja na področju kemijskega inženirstva.

Zelo odmevne so predlagane korelacije za napoved hidrodinamskih parametrov v kapalnem reaktorju in uvedba oksidacije organskih spojin v vodnih raztopinah v prisotnosti trdnega katalizatorja. Proces za oksidacijo organskih polutantov v industrijskih odpadnih vodah je zaščiten s štirimi mednarodnimi patenti.

The Zois Award and the Puh Award

The Zois Award for lifetime achievement was granted to Acad. Prof. Dr. Janez Levec, Head of the Laboratory of Catalysis and Chemical Reaction Engineering.

In Slovenia, he is one of the founders of research into chemical engineering. His proposed correlations for forecasting hydrodynamic parameters in a trickle-bed reactor and the implementation of oxidation of organic compounds in aqueous solutions in the presence of a solid catalyst are highly renowned. The process of the oxidation of organic pollutants in industrial waste waters is protected with four international patents.

Puhovo priznanje je prejela mešana skupina raziskovalcev Laboratorija za molekularno biologijo in nanobiotehnologijo Kemijskega inštituta (L11) ter farmacevtskega podjetja Lek, d. d., za razvoj podobnih bioloških zdravil filgrastim in pegfilgrastim ter njun prenos v proizvodnjo. V skupini so sodelovale mag.

Priznanje za življenjsko delo na področju kemometrije

Zaslužni profesor Kemijskega inštituta, dr. Jurij Zupan, je na 14. konferenci CAC 2014 (14th Conference on Chemometrics in Analytical Chemistry) v Richmondu, ZDA, prejel prestižno priznanje za življenjsko delo na področju kemometrije.

He is one of the leading theoreticians in his field and he is a dedicated pedagogue who transfers his knowledge not only within the academic environment but also to industry.

The Puh Award was conferred for development of biosimilar drugs filgrastim and pegfilgrastim and their transfer into production, to the mixed research group from pharmaceutical company Lek and National Institute of Chemistry, with participation of the following colleagues from the Laboratory for Molecular Biology and Nanobiotechnology (L11): mag. Tanja Milunović, dr. Vladka Gaberc Porekar and Ana Jesenko (both retired).
