Some papers published in the most prestigi-ous scientific publications should be awarded special mention. Researchers from the De-partment of Synthetic Biology and Immunology (D12) reported on the development and use of selective “molecular clamps” to regulate the functioning of human cells. This can significan-tly improve the regulation of human cell functio-ning, which will be useful for both research and cell therapy. They demonstrated that they can simultaneously direct molecules into multiple targeted areas of cells with these clamps and that they can significantly improve the ability to regulate cell functioning with light or chemical compounds with this approach, which will be very useful for therapeutic purposes. Building blocks that they used were the coiled coils, whi-ch are otherwise used for forming protein ca-ges within the framework of the ERC Advanced Grant project led by Prof. Dr. Roman Jerala. The research, which was conducted at the National Institute of Chemistry in its entirety, was publi-shed in the distinguipubli-shed journal Nature Chemi-cal Biology (journal impact factor of 12.59) in a paper titled “A tunable orthogonal coiled-coil interaction toolbox for engineering mammali-an cells”.

Researchers from the Department of Mate-rials Chemistry (D10) published a paper titled

“Stability and degradation mechanisms of copper-based catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction” in the prestigious journal An-gewandte Chemie: International Edition (journal impact factor of 12.96). Only those materials that are sufficiently stable under harsh electro-catalytic conditions can be efficient electroca-talysts. Therefore, precious metals such as pla-tinum, iridium and ruthenium dominate among electrocatalysts, as they are relatively stable in this type of corrosive environment. Howe-ver, even precious metals degrade with time.

The cause for this is primarily the changing electrical voltage and the associated transient dissolution phenomena. To be able to study de-gradation processes and design more stable electrocatalysts, it is essential to detect extre-mely low concentrations of dissolved metals in electrochemical experiments. For this purpose, Posebej velja izpostaviti nekaj člankov,

Raziskovalci Odseka za kemijo materialov (D10) so objavili članek z naslovom “Stability and degradation mechanisms of copper-based catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction” v prestižni reviji Angewandte Chemie: International Edition (faktor vpliva revije je 12,96).

delova-the researchers developed a sensitive tech-nique in which an electrochemical flow cell is connected to an ICP-MS detector. To be able to study the degradation of materials under con-ditions as close to real operating concon-ditions as possible, they are also developing techniques to implement electrochemical protocols at high current densities and at elevated temperatures.

A researcher from the Theory Department (D01), Laboratory for Cheminformatics and a researcher from CNR-IOM, Italy published a paper titled “All-atom simulations decrypt the molecular terms of RNA catalysis in the exon-ligation step of the spliceosome” in the journal ACS Catalysis (journal impact factor of 12.35). Results of their research contribute to the advancement in understanding the spli-cing mechanism in eukaryotes, revealing how the catalytic core of spliceosome’s ancestors - self-splicing ribozymes - remained conserved during evolution. Understanding the splicing mechanism is of paramount importance from the microbiological, biotechnological and phar-macological perspective. Improper splicing is related to numerous complex diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration.

Raziskovalec Teoretičnega odseka (D01), La-boratorija za kemijsko informatiko in razisko-valka s CNR-IOM, Italija, sta v reviji ACS Catalysis (faktor vpliva revije je 12,35) objavila članek z naslovom: “All-atom simulations decrypt the molecular terms of RNA catalysis in the exon--ligation step of the spliceosome”.

Raziskava je bila objavljena v ugledni reviji Journal of the American Chemical Society: JACS (faktor vpliva revije je 14,61) v članku z naslo-vom »Electrolyte reactivity in the double layer in Mg batteries: an interface potential-depen-dent DFT study«.

Raziskovalke in raziskovalci Odseka za anor-gansko kemijo in tehnologijo (D09) so skupaj s soavtorji Odseka za katalizo in reakcijsko inže-nirstvo (D13), Odseka za kemijo materialov (D10) in soavtorico iz Bolgarije (Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry, Bulga-rian Academy of Science) objavili rezultate raz-iskave v članku z naslovom »Synergistic effect of CuO nanocrystals and Cu-oxo-Fe clusters on silica support in promotion of total catalytic oxidation of toluene as a model volatile organic air pollutant« v reviji Applied Catalysis B, Envi-ronmental (faktor vpliva revije je 16,68).

Researchers from the Department of Materials Chemistry (D10), in collaboration with Jožef Ste-fan Institute and Institute Charles Gerhardt Mon-tpellier, reported on a new theoretical approach that takes into account the impact of the diffe-rence in potential at the atomic level. Methodo-logy, which is transferable to all electrochemical systems, enables the understanding of processes in double layer and their optimization. The rese-arch was published in the distinguished Journal of the American Chemical Society: JACS (impact factor of 14.61) in the paper titled “Electrolyte reactivity in the double layer in Mg batteries: an interface potential-dependent DFT study”.

Researchers from the Department of Inorganic Chemistry and Technology (D09), together with co-authors from the Department of Catalysis and Chemical Reaction Engineering (D13), De-partment of Materials Chemistry (D10) and a co--author from Bulgaria (Institute of Organic Che-mistry with Centre of PhytocheChe-mistry, Bulgarian Academy of Science) published results of their research in the paper titled “Synergistic effect of CuO nanocrystals and Cu-oxo-Fe clusters on silica support in promotion of total catalytic oxi-dation of toluene as a model volatile organic air pollutant” in the journal Applied Catalysis B, En-vironmental (journal impact factor of 16.68). Re-sults are an important contribution to the rese-arch area of bimetallic catalysts on silica support with synergistic effect. Such catalysts are also useful in other areas, such as with a total

Rezultati, objavljeni v članku z naslovom »Domain-wall pinning and defect ordering in BiFeO3 probed on the atomic and nanoscale«, so pomembni pri izkoriščanju lokalnih lastnostih domenskih sten v nanoelektroniki in funkcionalnih odzivih polik-ristaliničnih feroelektrikov.

tion of volatile organic compounds in waste wa-ter and selective oxidation of the conversion of biomass to chemicals and fuels.

In a study published in the journal Natu-re Communications (journal impact factor of 12.12), researchers from the Electronic Cera-mic Department and Nanostructured Materials Department of Jožef Stefan Institute and the Department of Materials Chemistry (D10) expe-rimentally proved a dynamic interaction between conductive domain-walls in BiFeO3 and p-type defects gathered on the wall under electric field.

They also demonstrated that the cooling rate affects gathering of p-type defects on the walls and consequently their local structure and con-ductivity. The results published in the paper titled

“Domain-wall pinning and defect ordering in BiFeO3 probed on the atomic and nanoscale” are important for the utilization of local properties of domain-walls in nanoelectronics and functional responses of polycrystalline ferroelectrics.

The effect of ribosome heterogeneity and ribo-some-associated proteins on the molecular con-trol of proteomes in healthy and ill people rema-ins unclear. Researchers from the Department of Molecular Biology and Nanobiotechnology (D11) participated in an important breakthrou-gh in this area. In the paper titled “SMN-primed ribosomes modulate the translation of tran-scripts related to spinal muscular atrophy”, pu-blished in the journal Nature Cell Biology (journal impact factor of 20.04), they demonstrated that survival motor neuron (SMN) protein, the loss of which causes the neuromuscular disease spi-nal muscular atrophy (SMA), binds to ribosomes and that this interaction is tissue-dependent.

Authors from the CNR Unit at Trento, University of Trento, University of Edinburgh, UMC Utrecht Brain Center, Utrecht, Immagina Biotechnology and the National Institute of Chemistry partici-pated in the study.

Sterile inflammation is a physiological con-dition that develops in the absence of microbi-al infection due to tissue damage but can microbi-also be the basis of the pathogenesis of numerous chronic diseases. Sterile inflammation inclu-des an increased production of reactive types of oxygen that are a part of oxidative stress. One

Rezultati raziskave so bili objavljeni v članku z naslovom “Synergy betwe-en 15-lipoxygbetwe-enase and secreted PLA2 promo-tes inflammation by formation of TLR4 agonists from extracellular vesicles” v ugledni reviji Pro-ceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (faktor vpliva revije je 9,41).

of the main characteristics of oxidative stress is an increased peroxidation of phospholipids, which defines them as potential injury-related molecular patterns. Researchers from the De-partment of Synthetic Biology and Immunology (D12) discovered that extracellular vesicles that release from cells under oxidative stress activa-te an important receptor of the natural immune system TLR4, but unlike a bacterial lipopolysa-ccharide, which is the basis for distinguishing between inflammation, triggered by infection, or sterile inflammation. Results of the study were published in the paper titled “Synergy between 15-lipoxygenase and secreted PLA2 promotes inflammation by formation of TLR4 agonists from extracellular vesicles” in the di-stinguished journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of Ame-rica (journal impact factor of 9.41).

v gospodarstvo Transfer of knowledge to the economy

The National Institute of Chemistry is an impor-tant stakeholder in the Slovenian and interna-tional innovation ecosystem. In terms of scope of the transfer of knowledge and technologies into industry, we have been one of the leading public research organizations for a number of years.

In 2020, the National Institute of Chemistry con-tinued successful collaborations with industry and concluded new collaborations with companies such as Honda R&D Europe, Neste Engineering Solutions Oy, Total Research & Technology Feluy, Oxford Nanopore Technologies Limited, Lek d.d., Dechra Limited, Krka, tovarna zdravil Novo Mes-to, MGC Pharmaceuticals d.o.o., Calcit d.o.o., BIA Separations, NAVITAS d.o.o., Evonik Operations GmbH and Entomics Biosystems Ltd.

A direct sale of technical knowledge to a foreign industrial partner in the amount of €35,000.00 was concluded.

Internal “Proof of Concept” initiative NICKI We carried out the internal “Proof of Concept”

(“PoC”) initiative NICKI for the second year in a row. The initiative is intended to further develop the Technology Readiness Level (TRL 3-6/7) of the most promising innovations of the National Institute of Chemistry from a market perspec-tive. The Institute's funds enable the selected projects to pay for external services, such as additional testing of materials, obtaining mar-ket data and information on the needs of indus-try, increasing production capacity, etc. These are the areas that indicate the economic poten-tial of research to the industry. From the five ap-plications received, a group of internal evalua-tors, with the support of an external evaluator, selected four projects:

Interna »Proof of concept« spodbuda NICKI Že drugo leto zapored smo izvedli interno spod-budo NICKI za »preverbo koncepta« oziroma

»Proof of concept« (skrajšano »PoC«).

Izbranim projektom inštitutska sredstva omo-gočijo plačilo zunanjih storitev, kot so dodatna testiranja materialov, pridobivanje informacij o trgu in potrebah industrije, povečanje proizvo-dnih kapacitet ipd.
