Projekt »APPLAUSE (Alien PLAnt SpEcies )«

naslavlja nerešena vprašanja glede ravnanja z invazivnimi tujerodnimi rastlinami v smislu zero-waste pristopa in krožnega gospodar-stva. Skozi projekt razvijamo

The project "APPLAUSE (Alien PLAnt SpE-cies)" addresses unresolved issues regarding the management of invasive alien plants in terms of a zero-waste approach and circular economy. Through the project, we are developing a greener way of pre-treating paper pulp, and the waste generated during the above pre-treatment is processed into in-put raw materials for industry. We are search-ing for a solution for wood residues, which now represent an energy source, but we can also process them into other useful products. We verify the suitability of the selected invasive plant species for food, produce natural dyes from them and test them as domestic prepara-tions against plant diseases and pests. We also use data from a new generation of European Sentinel-2 observation satellites to monitor the prevalence status of invasive plants.

In 2020, the National Institute of Chemistry started to implement 15 new Horizon 2020 projects, with 18 projects already being implemented in 2019.

Posodobitev opreme NMR centra

tradici-Equipment upgrade at the NMR Centre

The Slovenian NMR Centre now has two new and two upgraded NMR spectrometers. This state--of-the-art research equipment will enable de-velopment of high-quality innovations for solving social challenges, both in the academic and eco-nomic spheres.

The Slovenian NMR Centre is an international-ly recognized national research infrastructure that has been operating at the National Institute of Chemistry since its establishment in 1992. It provides researchers access to modern NMR spectrometers and expert assistance in planning experiments and interpreting the results. With high profile achievements, we help to deepen the understanding of challenges at the theoretical and applied level as well as to find appropriate solutions. NMR spectroscopy is the fundamental method for determining molecule structures and the analysis of various substances and materi-als in the fields of chemistry, pharmacy, physics, medicine, food, environment, etc. An important aspect of the Slovenian NMR Centre’s operation is its educational role. The Slovenian NMR Cen-tre trains researchers in performing NMR expe-riments as well as solving and interpreting NMR spectra in specific structural problems within the framework of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral theses. The Slovenian NMR Centre is also a European Centre of Excellence. This gave the National Institute of Chemistry international recognition and contributed to its inclusion in CE-RIC-ERIC as a Partner Facility. CECE-RIC-ERIC, in addition to Slovenia’s, includes Partner Facilities of Italy, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Roma-nia, Poland and Hungary in its operation. It must be noted that each country decides per its sole di-rection which equipment it will include in CERIC--ERIC. The assessment of the scientific excellen-ce of an individual Partner Facility is (was) left to the International Scientific Committee. An impor-tant element of the selection and inclusion of an individual research equipment and facility is the complementarity of the equipment. Participation in CERIC-ERIC supports the realization of the

vi-jo vlaganj v razvoj raziskovalne infrastrukture in močnejšim ekonomskim zaledjem. Koordinirana vlaganja v moderno raziskovalno opremo v Slo-veniji omogočajo razvoj znanja in kompetenc za učinkovito in enakopravno vključevanje v medna-rodne raziskovalne konzorcije.

sion that Central and Eastern Europe, with limited resources, are able to compete against regions with longer tradition of investing into the develo-pment of research infrastructure and a stronger economic background. Coordinated investments into modern research equipment in Slovenia fa-cilitate development of knowledge and competen-ces for efficient and equal involvement in interna-tional research consortiums.

As a European Centre of Excellence, the NMR Centre constantly strives to upgrade its research equipment, which allows it to maintain its position in the field of NMR research. Based on the call for applications for the “Development of Research In-frastructure for the International Competitiveness of the Slovenian R&D Area - RI-SI-CERIC” project and the international evaluation by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, the National Institute of Chemistry was selected to upgrade or purchase research equipment, namely a 600 (Lara) and 800 (David) MHz NMR upgrade of spectrometers and the purchase of new 600 (Oro) and 400 (Nika) MHz NMR spectrometers. The operation was co-finan-ced by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport.

The purpose of the investment project is to strengthen the European Centre of Excellence with quality and visibility in a richer and more competitive European scientific research area, contribute to the reputation and recognition of Slovenian knowledge and science, with strong emphasis on the educational role of the Slovenian NMR Centre, improve working conditions and to enable research partners and all other stakehol-ders high-quality research and thus the possibility of developing new products with high added value.

Specific goals of the abovementioned inve-stment project are opening new research areas and developing new services that significantly im-pact global R&D trends and are described under the photo of each individual NMR spectrometer.

David: The 800 MHz NMR spectrometer was upgraded with a new console and a cryogenic probe with high sensitivity on the proton channel.

This enables the determination of compounds in low concentration samples. The advantages of NMR spectrometers at a high field such as the 800 MHz spectrometer are best demonstrated when researching biological macromolecules such as proteins.

Lara: The upgrade of the 600 MHz NMR spectro-meter has contributed to increased resolution and sensitivity in studies of the structures and dynamic equilibria of small organic molecules as well as large biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids in a solution. The new console, in combination with the new cryogenic probe, enables the use of state-of-the-art tech-nology for recoding NMR spectra. The system for automatic changing of samples with a refrigerator allows the analysis of a larger number of samples for the needs of metabolic studies.

Oro: Nov 600 MHz NMR spektrometer omo-goča izvajanje NMR eksperimentov z visoko ločljivostjo in občutljivostjo.

Oro: The new 600 MHz NMR spectrometer enables the performance of NMR experiments with high resolution and sensitivity. It is prima-rily intended for studying structures and dyna-mic equilibria of (small) organic molecules, but it also enables studying of synthetic polymers and materials that show reduced or anisotropic mobility, such as e.g. polymer gels, lipids, tissue samples, resins (used as carriers in combinato-rial chemistry), plant and food samples.

Nika: The new 400 MHz NMR spectrometer is used for measurements that contribute to the authentication of Slovenian wines with the SNIF--NMR method and 1H NMR food profiling for fast and efficient detection of counterfeiting and fal-se labelling of food products or their origin. Nika is also equipped with a probe for recording NMR spectra in solid state.

Evalvacijo ERC prijav izvajajo strokovni paneli.

The European Commission established the Euro-pean Research Council (ERC) in 2006. The institu-tion is run by scientists and the main goal of the ERC is the attractive and long-term financing of excellent researchers and their research teams to carry out ground-breaking and risky research promising new and fundamental findings. Re-search funded by the ERC leads to the progress of existing knowledge and to the setting of clear ob-jectives for fundamental research in Europe. Sci-entific excellence is the only criterion for granting financial resources. Evaluation of ERC applications is performed by expert panels. Applications can come from all scientific fields. The applicant may, at the time of application, be anywhere in the world but is obliged to carry out the ERC project at one of the European Institutions. The ERC also aims to improve career opportunities and the indepen-dence of researchers in their early career stages.

Each year, the ERC publishes the ERC Work Programme, which forms the basis for the follow-ing research calls for the current year:

• the ERC Call for the Start of the Independent Path of a Researcher (2-7 years after receiving a PhD title) - Starting Grant

• the ERC Call for Consolidating the Independent Path of a Researcher (7-12 years after receiving a PhD title) - Consolidator Grant

• the ERC Call for Recognised Researchers - Ad-vanced Grant

• the ERC Call for Synergy Projects, with the coor-dinated participation of 2-4 leading researchers - Synergy Grant
